This critique is based on the theatre entitled Ruby Moon. This theatre of Ruby Moon is written by a famous playwright, Matt Cameron and is directed by Christopher Ling. It was performed on 1st of March 2013 at Pentas 2, KLPAC in Kuala Lumpur. This theatre is about the unrevealed mystery of a missing little girl named Ruby Moon. The girl is a daughter of Ray Moon, and Sylvie Moon, who are mentally unstable since they lost their Ruby. A lot of catastrophe happened to them when they were trying to resolve the mystery of Ruby’s lost.
This play was started and ended with the exact same scene—where both of them were together, staring at the mannequin of Ruby. This story rose up my sympathy and making me wondering as well, that if I were in that situation, maybe I will do the same thing as what they did. If I were asked to rate this play, I would rate it for 4 out of 5 because it was my very first play I have ever seen throughout my life and it gave me such a good perception of performing arts.
The play was acted by two performers- Alex Chua as Ray Moon and Davina Goh who played a role as Sylvie Moon. For me, the actors had successfully linked emotionally to the audiences as they were able to create a dramatic atmosphere that the spectators are cleared of their messages via their emotions perhaps. I was actually facing difficulties of understanding the words in that accent even though the enunciation was perfect. The actors had done a great job with their paralanguage skills as in some scenes where was no dialogue used, only their gestures involved, I was cleared of what emotions they were tried to deliver.
The set was to me too small and simple. The first thought came to my mind when I heard of this Ruby Moon play was the play might be performed on a big stage. And about the mat on the floor, I totally have no idea how it was supposed to be functioning. The lights on the set really work in conveying our mood. When the lights went dim and bright, the colours chosen for the light were indeed creating emotional atmospheres. The costumes were perfect and the sound effects used really suitable. And I noticed that they made some arrangement of the sound. When the actors are talking, then no sound effect was used. It will be used when there was no-dialogue scene in order to increase the audience understanding.
The audience were very attentive perhaps. As I was observing my surrounding that time, everyone was paying full attention to the performance. Audiences are being interested of the play as the actors managed to link themselves internally with the audiences. For me, this play is a brilliant play as the actors managed to perform it brilliantly. It had built a good perception of mine towards the performing arts in play in order for me to appreciate this art.

TASK: INDIVIDUAL THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE CRITIQUE: RUBY MOON
This critique is based on a theatrical performance entitled, ‘Ruby Moon’. Ruby Moon is a playwright written by Matt Cameron. This play is directed by Christopher Ling. There are only two actors in the play: the main actor is Alex Chua portraying as Ray Moon, and the main actress is Davina Goh portraying as Sylvie Moon. The play was performed at Pentas 2, KLPAC on the 1st of March, 2013. In my opinion, the main theme of the play is acceptance. Ray Moon and Sylvie Moon’s daughter went missing and this couple is unable to accept the fact that their daughter is missing.
This play is about the inability of a couple to cope and accept the fact that their six year old daughter, Ruby Moon is missing. If Ray Moon, the husband is unable to communicate with his wife, Sylvie Moon this lonely forlorn couple will play a strange game which is to re-act the tragedy of the day when little Ruby Moon went missing. Frankly speaking, the play had a dark, twisted and sad story line. Nevertheless, it was both interesting and entertaining as it keeps me wanting to know more about what is going to happen next. I love the actual script, but of course I would have preferred a happy ending. Whereby, this play is an absurd type of play where there is no end to the story line. In the play, Ray Moon asked and begged Sylvie to come back to him and to stop the game as he was sick of this role plays of possibilities that may occur on the day when Ruby Moon went missing, but Sylvie keep asking him to act along with her and he had no choice but to do so if he wanted her back and these games is repeated over and over again every time Ray is unable to communicate with Sylvie.
The story was believable and miserable as it relates to the cases of missing children in Malaysia which is increasing by the day and instead of showing what the effects was on the missing child it shows us what could have happened to the parents. In Ruby Moon, the actors did not use their real names but instead they use the character’s name. In my opinion it is easier to act when we have some sort of medium to relate to the character we are playing. During the Q&A session Davina and Alex told us that before they act out a role they would make up a bio data for each of the character so that they will be able to enhance their concentration and emotions. Besides that, their volume and articulation amazed me every time they spoke. The tone and mood was perfect, but there are times when the actors spoke too fast and I could not understand what they are saying. Along with their voices, the gesture and body movement makes their act more genuine. Davina for instance, changes from the mentally depressed Sylvie Moon to the gorgeous and sexy Veronica in split seconds along with her gesture and body movements that indicate she is another character or the same character.
The design of the set was moderate but convincing for the audience to relate to the play. Minimal usage of props enhance the mood of the play as it describes the emptiness that Sylvie and Ray Moon feels as they lost their little girl Ruby. The usage of prop indicates the place and time period of the play. For example, when there is a desk and a phone the audience would know that they are in their own house, as Sylvie was always waiting for the phone to ring. As for the lighting, I thought that it was quite good and it does improve the mood of the play. For example, dim light portrays gloominess of Sylvie and Ray Moon and patterned lights give a mood that they are outdoors. The actors used the same outfit to indicate what character they are acting as. For example, Ray Moon wear a lab coat to indicate that he is acting as the mad scientist and wears a funny looking hat with a stained shirt while acting as Sunny Jim. The sound effects were superb. Onn San the sound coordinator’s art of sound was amazing. The barking of the dogs in the beginning of the play felt so real that I thought there was a real dog outside barking. If this play was a musical, it will definitely capture the audience’s heart to hear such an amazing piece of orchestra.
As an audience, I was attentive for the whole play as I know that there’s no replay button to press if I missed a part. So I paid full attention to the play, more over the intonation and tone was attractive and I could not find myself to be bored with the play. In my opinion the play is interesting as I wanted to know more and ponder on what would happen next. As a whole I love the play and frankly speaking I fell in love with the actors. Suddenly I’m a fan of both Davina Goh and Alex Chua. I liked their character and acting in Ruby Moon, I was amazed that they could swap roles quickly and deliver the audience with an excellent performance.

Theater Critique: Ruby Moon
The title of the theater that I watched on 1st of March 2013 was Ruby Moon. The one and the half hour’s theater which started at 8.30 until 10.00 in the evening was held at Pentas 2 of Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre(KLPAC). Ruby Moon was written by Matt Cameron. Christopher Ling was the excellent director and production designer for the theater. The actor was Alex Chua and Davina Goh was the actress. From my opinion, Ruby Moon was based on the missing children’s cases. Basically, the parents of the missing child will live in misery. The mother wanted her daughter back and the husband wanted his wife back.
Both Ray and Sylvie Moon tried very hard to find the culprits which related to their daughter’s disappearance. They role-played the incidences happen on the night when their daughter was no where to be found. They met all their eccentric neighbours and questioned them. However, none of them could give them information that really useful for their findings. They accussed each other. At the end, they could not find any signs that lead them to Ruby. In order to reveal the truth, they did the same things every night. I could not understand the story well but I managed to get the idea of the story after the Question and Answer session. It was interesting because I learned something new from the play. I loved the script although I found that some of the words were confusing.
I sensed the change in the characters into another characters. Each of Alex Chua and Davina Goh role-played another three characters. Both of them played their other characters successfully and made us as the audience understood the characteristics of the characters better. They conveyed the scripts clearly except for sometimes they talked too fast and we could not catch the words. Their body gestures and movement suited the characters they played.
The white mat consisted the map of their neighbourhood. When they stood at each box, we knew that they were at different places. The props for the theater were limited and related to the mood of the play. The time of the theater was obviously at night. I liked the scenography because all the lighting involved created the right mood to the the theater. The costumes used potrayed different characters played. The makeup is simple and it was standardised with the role played. Other than that, the sounds and musics created mood of gloominess throughout the theater. The music sounded real for some parts and it made me impressed with the usage of suitable background music. It helped us felt the sadness of the parents that were trying hard to find their lost daughter. As the theater was based on a serious issue, I do not think it is better if it is musical.
Honestly, that was my first time to watch a theater. Some of the scene were out of my expectation. For example, the kissing scene. I was shocked as I thought such scene will not be played in the theater. At the same time, I learned that every theater has different genre and I found that Ruby Moon is an absurb as it has no exact ending and they kept repeating the same acts. In conclusion, I like the theater because it displays the urgency and helps us as the society to realize that children missing issues are getting worse nowadays.

On 1st March 2013, PPISMP TESL semester 2 and PISMP TESL semester 5 were having a trip to Kuala Lumpur to watch a theatre, Ruby Moon at Kuala Lumpur Perfoming Arts Centre (KLPAC). The playwright of this theatre is Matt Cameron. Directed by Christopher Ling, this interesting theatre was played by Davina Goh and Alex Chua who were playing more than one character. Basically, the main characters of this play were Sylvie Moon and Ray Moon. From my opinion, the theme of this theatre is the suffering faced by the parents who lost their child.
This is my first time watching a live theatre and it was not so bad. This theatre has its unique plot and it was very interesting as it brought out the issue on what is happening in our world and the consequences to the people who faced it. Based on what I understand, this theatre was actually about Sylvie and Ray Moon who lost their child which caused their live to be upside down and Ray seemed to lost his wife too as she was too overwhelmed by her sadness. For me, this theatre will make people realise that they should pay more attention to the safety of their children as I believe they would not want to be like the Moons. I like the actual script of this play but somehow I felt it is better if it comes to an end and not just hanging like that as we wanted to know what would happen to Moon’s couple.
I think both Davina Goh and Alex Chua were believable in their way acted out the characters. I could feel the sadness that Sylvie felt and also the depression faced by Ray. They were able to express out their feeling. When Davina played as Veronica, I thought she was actually a good seducer and was very different with Sylvie. Problem that I faced during this play was, I think the actor and actress were speaking so fast although they spoke in suitable volume. If they slow down a bit, I think I could understand the play better. For me, their body gestures and body movement were stayed true to the characters. For example, Veronica looked sexy in the way she stood and spoke and looked different from Sylvie although the same person acted those characters.
From my point of view, the set they had used was able to establish a definite mood. As they used simple stage with only minimal props for the whole play, it established emptiness and gloominess mood which was suitable for the story. As the audience, I could feel the sadness and emptiness felt by the Moons. The lights also helped in established suitable mood for every scene but sometimes I felt it was too dark there and quite freaky. The costume and make up for the actor and actress for me were just fine. They were able to play their characters very well although only simple costume and make up used. As they played more than one characters and only have limited time for every scene, I think simple costume and make up were more than enough. Credits should be given to the sound director as he was able to make the theatre alive with all the interesting and ‘live’ sound throughout the play. Sometimes I felt it was real and it freaked me out especially the sound of dogs’ bark and the mysterious song.
Throughout the play, I think all the audiences were attentive and interested on this play as I did not see anybody fall asleep or chattered to others or walked away. They just paid attention on what they were seeing. I think there was no reason for them to turn they head to somewhere else as the theatre was very interesting. I think this theatre was really good with its interesting plot, talented actor and actress and lights and props which helped in established the mood. Everything was just enough.
Based on what I understand, this theatre was actually about Sylvie and Ray Moon who lost their child which caused their live to be upside down and Ray seemed to lost his wife too as she was too overwhelmed by her sadness. As a result, every night they would play a game as a help to cope with the lost which brought out their imagination of people who they thought took their child away.
I love the way they used limited props in this theatre as it created emptiness and gloominess mood which was suitable for the story. If they used too many props, the audience will focus more to the props instead of focusing on the acting. Credits should be given to the sound director as he was able to make the theatre alive with all the interesting and ‘live’ sound throughout the play. Sometimes I felt it was real and it freaked me out especially the sound of dogs bark and the mysterious song. One of the important parts in drama is the lights which help to create the mood. In this theatre, I love the way they changed the lights for every scene and how they used lights to make something real. For example, there was a shining light focused on Sylvie’s face when she opened the window which represented the moon’s light. The costume and make up for actor and actress were just fine for me. As they only had a few minutes to change their clothes for every scene, I think simple costume and make up were necessary. I was having problem in understanding their dialogues as the actor and actress were speaking so fast. Nevertheless, I was still being able to understand what the story was about.
This theatre was very interesting for me. From my opinion, this theatre would make the audience think more about their children and try to protect them with their very best.

TASK : THEATRE REVIEW OF RUBY MOON
Ruby Moon is an Australian play by Matt Cameron, originally written for young adult audiences, is making its premier from 28th February until 3rd March 2013 as part of Kuala Lumpur Perfoming Arts Centre (klpac) programs. Ruby Moon play is an ideal choice as it allows the director, Christopher Ling to work very closely and intimately with his two actors, Alex Chua and Davina Goh. Ruby Moon is a beautifully layered play. It touches on the nature of grief, portrays the secret lives of children and adults, the desperate loneliness of community, what it means to lose something and what is lost and the desperate games we play when the nights are long and sleep never comes.
This play succeeds to appear as a fractured fairytale for Little Red Riding Hood. The opening voice-over by Ruby, “It begins like a fairy-tale” immediately establishes this element, with a little later Sylvie asking Ray to “tell her the story”. The play draws on the familiar fairy-tale of Little Red Riding Hood, with Ruby in her red dress setting off to visit Grandma Moon. However, there are no happy endings or simple certainties in this modern, realistic version.
There are also interesting and entertaining part in this play that was portrayed in dark comedy between the interactions of neighbors such as Sid, Sonny Jim and Dawn. Sonny Jim’s poem recital for Sylvie, “Mother” evocatively captures the dark humour inherent within the play: “Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!... I love you”.
The two actors manage to transform into their characters well. There are some gestures and body movement that stay true to the characters such as the way they walk, hands and so on. It helps the audience to distinguish between different characters. At the end of the play, the character’s play are quite confusing as both of them play all the neighbors’ characters which eventually arousing the sense of surrealism and twist. Overall, their acting seems to be believable within the play that focuses on emotions and facial expression of the characters.
They played in the rectangular stage with the scenery surrounding the audience who are seated on stepped benches. It makes for a very intimate experience which is totally in keeping up with the play. The set is too simple for me. But throughout the play it helps me to focus more on what is really happening between the characters. It also establishes the sense of absurdity as the white piece of map that shows the maps of their neighborhood also tends to have no clue of their lost daughter.
The play catches the audience attentively as I can see their attentions given through their body gestures. No conversations happen during the play too. Perhaps the audiences also have a tremendous interest and really interested in the play. They give applauses to show their appreciation as the play finish. It is showed as they do not go out often to the restroom and pay respect throughout the play.
